The ship that sank twice

On February 19, 1949 the coastal freighter Bandak ran aground and sank at the entrance to the Sognefjord. Incredibly this was not the first time she sank - but it certainly was the last.

In February 1949 Bandak is on her way from Oslo to the little village of Årdal, located in the innermost parts of the Sognefjord.

The captain makes a navigational error as they are about to enter the world's longest fjord, and Bandak hits a rock and sinks.

Just two survivors

The crew are unable to save themselves crammed up against the granite, and seven of the nine crewmembers perish in the heavy seas.

Sank for the second time

Unknown to most, Bandak also went down in Öresund between Sweden and Denmark in 1947 after colliding with another vessel.

She was salvaged and restored, but to no avail: Just two years later her fate is sealed for good as she sinks for the second time.

Not much is left of the bow and midship after 60+ years on the bottom, but the stern is largely intact and is a beautiful sight.

Beautiful wreck dive

Today, the remains of Bandak rests on a light, sandy bottom at just 18-27 meters depth.

Parts of the ship has been completely demolished by heavy wave action at the site, but the stern is largely intact and makes for a very nice dive.
