The Dark Side...

...was the theme for the Unterwasser Visions photo contest in May 2014.
My image of the wreck "Parat" was voted into 9th place, and was presented in the August issue of Unterwasser.

Posted on Jul 25, 2014

The image wasn't actually shot at night, but under very dark conditions during a dive with Gulen Dive Resort on an overcast day in November 2012.

Thanks to other divers with extremely powerful video lights I was able to capture this quite special image of Parat - and the jury of the Visions contest agreed:

Only darkness allows the video lights of the divers to shine like this. In spite of little light, just enough details of the wreck are visible. There is a strong feeling of "being there" due to the targeted lighting, they wrote (translated from German).

Join the contest!

Unterwasser Visions runs every month except in December, and is open to all underwater photographers registered on the Unterwasser website (which is free).

The competition is judged by top photographers Eckhardt Krumpholz (D), Doug Perrine (USA), Lars Brinkmann (D), Eric Cheng (USA) and David Pilosof (IL) and Alex Mustard (UK).

Please visit the Unterwasser website to see the winning images and read more about the competition.
