Mecca for Wrecks and Caves

The combination of both historical and newly sunk wrecks, spectacular caves and some of the best visibility in the world makes Malta and Gozo the perfect destination for a true underwater adventure.

So begins the story in the August 2014 edition of German dive magazine Tauchen, as they run my Malta and Gozo story on an 8-page spread.

The two islands are very close to each other, just separated by a 30-minute ferry ride. This gives divers the opportunity to do several great wreck and cave dives - and now Tauchen share my experience with their readers.

The 110 meter long Libyan containership Um El Fahroud was sunk in 1998 after an accident had crippled her three years earlier.

Wrecks and caves

The story covers both wreck diving and spectacular caves. I visited several wrecks on both islands, and the story covers treats like Um El Fahroud, P-29 Boltenhagen and Karwela - as weell as two spectacular airplane wrecks: A Blenheim Bomber and a Bristol Beaufighter.

On Gozo, the world famous Blue Hole by the UNESCO World Heritage site Azure Window in Dwejra is a must - it's simply breathtaking both over and under water.

Biggest in Europe

Tauchen is Europe's biggest dive magazine with a printed circulation of 45.000 and an impressive estimated readership of 410.000, according to media data available on the publisher Top Jahr Verlag's homepage.

In 1945 the rescue steamer Parat was called upon to help the grounded German freighter Ferndale - but both were sunk in an ensuing allied air attack on the Norwegian west coast.
