8th in Unterwasser Visions

Sea hares are funny little creatures, and they can sometimes be surprisingly photogenic - like this little fellow who was just voted 8th in the Unterwasser Visions photo contest.

Posted on Apr 22, 2007

The theme of the monthly Unterwasser Visions competition for April 2007 was "Eyes Up", and the Aplysia punctata photographed in Austrheim on the Norwegian west coast in 2005 fit the bill perfectly.

The sea hare was crawling along the edge of a kelp frond, and after I had shot a few images it seemed to become aware of mye prescence.

It stopped and turned towards me - and to my great surprise looked straight into the camera. Bullseye!

Lots of fish eyes

Most people had entered different kinds of fish eyes, and realizing that something else probably would stand out against the competition I took a chance on this image.

The jury certainly agreed with this line of thinking, and the sea hare charmed its way into the top 10 images.

The image was entered late in the month, and therefore did not stand a chance in the online public vote. After the jury had deliberated the image was awarded a shared 8th place.

This is what the jury wrote about my image:

Christian Skauge from Norway was voted 8th with his sea hare picture - an outstanding, well-composed image.
