Fifth place at Wetpixel #370

Last week the theme of the Wetpixel Picture of the Week competition was "Man-Made", and my image from ESAs Neutral Buoyancy Facility was voted into fifth place.

DIVE INTO SPACE: At ESA's Neutral Buoyancy Facility in Cologne, Germany, divers and astronauts alike can experience weightlessness.

The image was shot in the astronaut training pool at the ESA facility in Cologne, Germany, and shows the mock-up of the Columbus module and a Mir airlock used to train for EVAs (Extra Vehicular Actitivties) at the International Space Station, ISS.

The pool at the European Space Agency's astronaut training centre measures about 17x10 meters, and is 10 meters deep.

Here, the astronauts learn to dive to be able to go through the necessary preparations for working in a weightless environment in space.

The pool is also used for general EVA training as well as mission-specific preparations before going into space.

The training facility is run by a company called Spacediving Training and Support Ltd., and they also welcome scuba divers and dive clubs on weekends.

I visited the Neutral Buoyancy Facility for two days in september 2009, and brought home a range of unusual and cool underwater pictures, several of which have done well in competitions - probably because of their unusual nature.

A total of 55 pictures competed this week, and here are the top three images:
