Second place at Wetpixel #373

Last week the theme of the Wetpixel Picture of the Week competition was "Red", and my image of a stone crab was voted into second place.

GLADIATOR OF THE SEA: The spiny stone crab makes for an excellent subject when it comes to portraits. Not only does it provide an interesting "face" - it is also often sitting quite still.

The image was shot on a trip to Vikaneset close to Kristiansund on the Norwegian west coast, and shows a portrait of a Norwegian stone crab, Lithodes maja.

The stone crab looks very much like a juvenile king crab, but can be distin- guished from it's lager relative by the difference in the tip of the rostrum.

On the stone crab the rostrum is split like a 'Y', whereas the king crab's rostrum is a single spine.

Not a real crab

The stone crab is not a real crab - in spite of it's name. The spiny crustacean belongs to the infraorder anomura and is therefore a closer relative to the hermit crab than the edible crab.

Stone crabs are common along the Norwegian coast, and are often found sitting under large anemones which provide cover and safety for the crabs.

For some reason, they seem attracted to wrecks and are often spotted here. Stone crabs are found from 10 to more than 600 meters depth.

A total of 96 pictures competed this week, which featured a multitude of different approaches to the theme.

Here are the top three images:
