Second and fourth at Wetpixel #379

Last week the theme of the Wetpixel Picture of the Week competition was "Squat Lobsters", and my images were voted into second and fourth place.

The image in second place (top right) shows a juventile Galathea strigosa sitting on a red cushion star.

The image was shot at the house reef of Gulen Dive Resort in 2007.

Galathea strigosa is the biggest squat lobster in the northeast Atlantic. According to Wikipedia it reaches a length of 90 mm.

Moon Bug

The image in fourth place (below, right) is entitled "Moon Bug" and was shot at Alona Beach in the Philippines in 2008. I have identified the species as a Galathea balssi.

This species was originally described in Japan as late as 1964 by Miyake & Baba, and only years later it was found elsewhere.

According to resources on the internet it may reach a size of up to 15 centimeters, and was named in honour of Heinrich Balss, a german zoologist specializing in decapods.

Shy creatures

Squat lobsters are found around the world and in a variety of environments.

In Norway, they tend to prefer hiding out in cracks and crevices during the day, becoming more active (though still shy) during the night.

This week there were just 38 entries in the Picture of the Week competition, probably because of the Easter holidays.

Congratulations to Alvaro Valloso for taking it away with his wonderful image of a squat lobster sitting in a crinoid, shot at Bali.

Here are the top three images:

Wetpixel Picture of the Week contest is open to anyone registered at the website, which is free. Every week there is a new challenge - you should try it too!
