Project AWARE contest winner

The votes have been cast, and my image of the underwater recycling plant at Gulen Dive Resort went all the way to the top in this year's Project AWARE "Dive Against Debris" photo contest.

The prices in the Project AWARE photo competition include a C9 underwater camera from Intova, divegear from Scubapro and an eLearning pass for PADI's EANx course.

Over a thousand people voted for their favourite image in the competition, and I would like to thank everyone who voted for mine!

Joanne Marston, Associate Director at Project AWARE in Austraila wrote me this in an email earlier today:

Congratulations! You are the Winner of Project AWARE’s “We Want Your Weirdest Marine Debris Photo” Contest. Over 1.000 people voted with your entry coming up as the Number 1 favourite. You’ll shortly receive an Intova C9 camera, a variety of gear from SCUBAPRO and a PADI elearning pass for a EANx speciality course. Well done!

Project AWARE competition page is now updated to reflect the winning entries.

Good press coverage

After tipping off the local media, several newspapers wrote about the competition and the finalists online or in print.

One Newspaper, Firda, devoted their entire first page and two pages within the newspaper to the underwater recycling plant!

Other media who wrote about the competition include Bergens Tidende, Bergensavisen, Strilen, Nordhordland Avis, Firda and Fiskeribladet Fiskaren.

Successful initiative

The image was shot at Gulen Dive Resort about a year after the launching of their underwater 'recycling' plant which was put up to give visiting divers the opportunity to help keep the house reef clean.

The initiative has been very successful, and today the house reef looks almost brand new, with much trash both old and new removed.

Please support this great iniative, either by starting your own underwater recycling plant at your dive resort - or by collecting a little trash and putting it in the bins the next time you visit Gulen Dive Resort!
