Wetpixel POTW #411 entries

Wetpixel's Picture of the Week #411 is open for entries, and this week's theme is "Orange". I opted for a nudibranch and a decorator crab.

The strange-looking decorator crab Microphrys bicornuta is my second entry on Wetpixel this week.

Wetpixel themes include specific colours on a regular basis, a great challenge that produces many different types of entries - both macro and wide angle.

In POTW #411 the colour of choice is orange, and I chose to enter the two images seen on this page.

The top picture shows a rather strange-looking, bubbly Eubranchus farrani, a very variable nudibranch that can show up in many different colours.

This orange variation is not among the most common, and the extremely inflated cerata (the ballon-like fringes on its back) are also quite rare.

The picture was taken during the 2010 Periphylla Safari at Gulen Dive Resort on the Norwegian west coast.

Bonaire decorator crab

My second entry this week is a nother strange creature - the wierd Microphrys bicornuta, known as a "speck-claw decorator crab".

This decorator crab is mainly active at night, and can be seen sitting on the branches of rope sponges.

This particular specimen was overgrown with an orange sponge, and although not perfectly camouflaged against the purple rope sponge it is a suitable entry in this week's Wetpixel competition.

The decorator crab was photographed at Bari Reef on Bonaire in December 2009.

Vote for your favourite!

The Wetpixel Picture of the Week competition is open for anyone, and every week there is a new theme. People from all over the world participate, and it is both fun and a good learning experience to take part and try to guess which images will do well and not.

Each competition is open for entries for one week, and the following week anyone can vote for their favourite images.

Please click below to see all the entries this week. The voting opens on Sunday November 27, 2011 at 23.00.
