Third place at Wetpixel #410

Last week the theme of the Wetpixel Picture of the Week competition was "Neighbours", and my image showing two happy coral hermit crabs was voted into third place.

Posted on Nov 28, 2011

The image was shot on a trip to the Philippines in 2008, and shows two Paguritta sp. hermit crabs, known as coral hermits.

Unlike most hermit crabs, these minute critters does not have a shell on their back, but instead live in an abandoned tube-worm burrow in the coral. They are unable to move around like other hermits, but as long as food is abundant this is apparently not a problem.

The coral hermits are not picky about what they eat, and almost anything that comes floating by is on the menu. It is believed that the long antennae also help in catching minute food particles.

The image was shot in the marine sanctuary off Alona Beach at Panglao Island, the Philippines.
