Cover and story in Alert Diver

DAN's quarterly publication Alert Diver is out, featuring my article about a deep air dive in the decompression chamber at Ullevål university hospital in Oslo. They also used my image on the cover.

Posted on May 25, 2012

Alert Diver is the only magazine of its kind, educating and informing divers on a number of topics, including medical issues, research studies, incident studies and safety insights.

The magazine has a circulation of 150.000 and is published in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch. The magazine is sent four times a year to DAN members, including 14.000 dive professionals and thousands of businesses and dive clubs.

Diving in the chamber at Ullevål hospital in Oslo was a great learning experience.

DAN estimate the total readership to be around 250.000 people, and I am very proud to be published to such a massive audience - especially since the article is a little outside my usual territory in terms of content.

Dive medicine is a field where I hold no qualifications, which makes contributing to DAN's important work keeping the global diving community up to date on safety, hazards and medical issues feel even greater.

I was very pleased with what editor-in-chief Professor Alessandro Marroni said about the article when it was approved for publication: "Beautifully written and useful!"

The editors even decided to use one of my images for the cover (right), which came as a complete surprise when the magazine was published!

I hope the article about my experience in the chamber will help make people aware of the hazards of deep air diving - and possibly even inspire someone to arrange a trip to their local chamber.
