Unterwasser Visions team victory

Team Norway finally rose to the challenge and claimed a much sought-after victory in the Unterwasser Visions contest in May 2012 - thanks to great images by Nils Aukan and Lill Haugen.

The theme for Unterwasser Visions in May 2012 was round, and my two teammates Nils Aukan and Lill Haugen claimed first and fifth place in competition with 107 images.

"Very unusual and very beautiful! The graphic nature of this stalked jellyfish is convincing and perfect." the jury wrote about the winning image.

This was Nils Aukan's second victory in the Unterwasser Visions contest. Congratulations!

This quite unusual image was shot with a Sigma 4.5 mm circular lens. Long live the circular fisheye! Together with the round sea urchin and the nice red and green colour contrast this is an unbeatable double, the jury wrote.

Last year's team captain Lill Haugen has won the Visions contest a couple times before, and was voted into 5th place by the jury with the above image.

No water = no Top 10

My image of a painted topshell (Calliostoma zizyphinum)(right) finished outside the Top 10 this month, but was still awarded five points - just enough to help ensure a team victory two points ahead of Switzerland. Germany trailed by three just points in third place.

The jury wrote: This fits the monthly theme perfectly and is obvious at first glance. Technically, we have no remarks - the tight crop, lighting and composition is pleasing.

The only flaw is that we cannot see water, and we're therefore unable to indentify this as an underwater photo. We still gave the image 5 points, but no place in the Top 10.

Fourth place overall

The victory means Team Norway advanced to fourth place in the overall standings, behind Germany, Switzerland and Spain who leads the team competition.

Team captain Lasse Iversen could not participate this month because he was abroad.

Alex Mustard joined the jury

The Unterwasser Visions 2012 contest is judged by top photographers Eckhardt Krumpholz (D), Doug Perrine (USA), Lars Brinkmann (D), Eric Cheng (USA) and David Pilosof (IL). They were joined this month by famous underwater photographer Alex Mustard (UK).
