Have you ever come up happy from a dive, only to be disappointed when reviewing your images later on? Where did that rare goby go? Ah, there it is - almost lost in the background clutter.

Sometimes you can use an anial itself to fill the frame and create an interesting and uniform background - like this close-up of a pufferfish.

Many underwater photographers neglect to consider the background - they're all too busy getting everything else together.

Getting the background right will significantly improve your images, and I hope this article will give you some useful pointers and new ideas.

It's not all about composition, angles or camera settings - you also have to consider what's in the background.

Many echinoderms offer great patterned backgrounds, and very often small crustaceans are found living on them. Always have a close look!
