7th place in Unterwasser Visions

The deep-sea jellyfish Periphylla periphylla has always been a head-turner, and so also in Unterwasser Visions: In May, my close-up image of the alien of the deep hit the jury dead center.

Posted on Jun 12, 2013

Fittingly, the theme for the May contest was images with centered subject matter, in an effort to break the traditional rules of photography.

The contest saw lots of great entries from across Europe, with Thomas Heckmann of Germany claiming yet another victory, shared with Austrian Ernst Koschier.

My image was shot at the Periphylla Safari at Gulen Dive Resort on the Norwegian west coast in January 2009:

This image of the deep-sea jellyfish Periphylla periphylla entitled "Alien of the Deep" was awarded a 7th place in Unterwasser Visions in May 2013.

This is what the jury had to say about my effort (translated from German):

The radiating tentacles point straight to the centre of the image, complementing the strict composition. A very interesting subject, perfectly places in the middle".

Overall results

The good result moved me one spot up on the overall leaderboard, where I now reside in 6th place with 11 points.

Team Norway did not have a strong month, and was only awarded a 6th place in the team competition - dropping to the same place in the overall ranking.

Team Norway 2013 consists of Lasse Iversen, Lill Haugen, Bjørnar Nygård and myself.
