Today's dive: Gulen House Reef

Today's dive was my first for a long time in Norwegian waters. I'm back at Gulen Dive Resort on the west coast, and the house reef offered some nice surprises: The nudibranchs are still here - even some of the rare ones.

The nudibranch season reaches its peak in March, but winter and spring is generally a good time to see nudibranchs in Norway.

The house reef at Gulen Dive Resort didn't greet me with spectacular visibility today - at the surface algae limited vision to 3-4 meters. Deeper down it was a different story - from 18 meters it was pretty good , at 30 meters it was crystal clear.

I started looking for nudibranchs, and was soon both surprised and pleased. A number of different species showed up, some of them quite rare:

From the left: Cumanotus beaumonti, Cuthona gymnota and Cuthona rubescens. Below is a lovely Flabellina pedata among empty seashells and rubble on the bottom.

I also found several of the strange variety of Flabellina lineata which was much debated at the Nudibranch Safari in March:

It was really nice to be back in the water! The coming days look promising - nudibranchs, wrecks and also a new divespot they have promised to show me.

The German freighter M/V Seattle is considered to be one of Norway's best wrecks - but it is also a very controversial dive: Since 1996 four divers have perished on the wreck. One of them has not been recovered. READ MORE

On February 19, 1949 the coastal freighter Bandak ran aground and sank at the entrance to the Sognefjord. Incredibly this was not the first time she sank - but it certainly was the last.
