Gearing up for the Nudisafari

The Nudibranch Safari is coming upon us before we know it, and I found it was time to get geared up and ready for this year's slugfest at Gulen Dive Resort. One of the things needed was a new stereo magnifier.

Posted on Feb 4, 2014

After reading up on it and looking endlessly online for something reasonable, the Amscope SM-1BSX popped up on eBay.

Besides having a cool name it more or less fit the bill in terms of what I wanted - and believe it or not it was on offer, too!

Adjustable magnification

The Amscope SM-1BSX is a zoom magnification stereo microsope. It is adjustable from 3.5x to 45x magnification, and comes with a set of 10x eyepieces making it suitable for industrial or biological inspection.

This is what I want - to be able to look at itsy-bitsy nudibranchs with some sort of hope to see the fine details that separate some of the species.

It does not have the kind of setup where light has to enter through a glass slide from behind, which would make it useless for scrutinizing sea slugs. Instead, the subject is put in a glass dish and viewed from above.

Perfect for looking at small stuff

With this magnification the Amscope SM-1BSX not a true microscope - it just enlarges really small things like stamps, coins, circuit boards - and nudibranchs.

The working distance of 200mm should make it easy to use and also to get enough light onto the subject - all I need now is some sort of light...

I will bring the stereo magnifier to Gulen Dive Resort for the Nudibranch Safari, along with my collection of nudibranch litterature. I will also bring a bunch of boxes and holding tanks for the collected material.

Nerdy stuff, I know... but nevertheless fun!

In the Amazon, they have something out of the ordinary: Pink river dolphins, called boto. I visited the Ariau Amazon Towers resort, and can now offer an exciting story with unique images.
