Runner-up in nudi competition

The winners of the first Nudibranch Photo Competition sponsored by Nauticam has just been announced. To my great pleasure three of my entries made it to the final!

Posted on Apr 17, 2014

The Nudibranch Photo Competition was founded to celebrate nudibranchs, and the inaugural competition attracted almost 1.000 images from photographers in 33 countries.

A rare species and shown it all its beauty in this graphically simple, put powerful composition, full of impact with the strong black background. Instantly eye catching, like a flower on a stem", the jury wrote about my Cumanotus beaumonti image (above).

Commended by Alex Mustard

In addition to the runner-up image, my image showing a Polycera quadrilineata was commended by Alex Mustard:

Small macro: Shooting something other than fill-the-frame, full frontal nudibranch shots can be very rewarding. This Polycera quarilineata entitled "Nudi in Space" was commended by Alex Mustard.

A very artistic take on a nudibranch portrait, shooting this nudibranch from above against a dark kelp leaf with only specs of sand showing up like stars in a night sky. Probably not to everyone's taste, but I love this fresh image", Alex Mustard wrote.

Two categories - more to come

This year, the competition only had two categories - United Kingdom and the rest of the World. The organizers say that there will probably be more categories next year.

Judges in the competition were Alex Mustard, Bernard Picton and Constantinos Petrinos.

The World category was won by Adriano Morettin of Italy with a spectacular nudibranch/sunburst image, while Mark Webster pretty much cleaned house in the UK category with 5 images among the 10 finalists. Congratulations to both of you!

This Flabellina lineata sitting on the edge of a kelp frond displaying its beautiful colors and patterns also reached the final.

Shot at the Nudibranch Safari

All my images were shot at the house reef of Gulen Dive Resort, home of the annual Nudibranch Safari. This is a great opportunity to learn more about nudibranch biology, behavior and identification - and of course also how to best photograph them.

I'm already looking forward to participating next year - but expect competition to be even fiercer once more people discover the competition.
