Images from Remøy and Runde

The ScubaPixel database now holds 30 new images from a trip to the islands of Remøy and Runde, south of Ålesund on the Norwegian west coast. Enjoy kelp forests and colorful macro life!

Posted on Apr 27, 2011

The area is famous for it's exceptional macro life, beautiful kelp forest and the canyons and caves below the bird mountain at Runde.

Diving the best spots around Runde can be difficult in bad weather, but on this trip Mother Nature had decided to play along and allowed us calm seas, brilliant sunshine and little wind.

The kelp forest was fresh and brightly colored with very little fouling, which is one of the bonuses when diving in the springtime.

Later in the year red algae, bryozoans, sponges and other invertebrates will slowly take advantage of the abundant real estate, and towards the end of the season the kelp is mostly covered with other life.

Below the kelp canopy, fish and all sorts of invertebrates were bustling about. One of my favorites are the hermit crabs which have a symbiotic anemone living on its shell.

The Norwegian dive magazine Dykking also ran a 7-page feature from this trip in their August 2008 issue:
