The Nudibranch Safari 2017 is held at Gulen Dive Resort north of Bergen on the Norwegian west coast. Join us to learn more about nudibranchs!

      • Nudibranch Safari: February 28 - March 5, 2017   

Lectures will be given by Bernard Picton, Klas Malmberg, Alexander Martynov and Torkild Bakken. Two lectures are offered each day.

The nudibranch Safari includes accommodation and four house reef diving opportunities a day. There is plenty of time for identifying nudibranchs and learning more in the workshop area. Additionally, an expedition boat dive to see what we can find elsewhere is included!

Nudibranch Safari program

Nudibranch Safari, Tuesday February 28 to Sunday March 5, 2017:

• Day 1 (28/2/17):
  Arrival at Gulen Dive Resort, welcome meeting @ ca. 20:00
• Day 2 (1/3/17):
  House reef dives, nudibranch lectures, workshop
• Day 3 (2/3/17):
  House reef dives, nudibranch lectures, workshop
• Day 4 (3/3/17):
  Expedition boat dives, house reef dives, nudibranch lectures, workshop
• Day 5 (4/3/17):
  House reef dives, nudibranch lectures, workshop
• Day 6 (5/3/16):
  Departure from Gulen Dive Resort


The package includes:

• 5 nights in shared twin rooms at Gulen Dive Resort
• 4 diving opportunities a day
• 1 expedition boat dive during the event
• 2 nudibranch lectures a day
• Workshop equipment, stereoscope, magnifiers, literature
• Tanks, weights and air for all dives
• Dinner for all participants every day
• After dive in 200BAR

The package does NOT include:

• Flights/transfer/travel costs
• Nitrox and rental gear


Booking should be done directly with Gulen Dive Resort who are responsible for the accommodation, facilities and diving. All dives are offered weather permitting (not usually an issue on the house reef).

The package can be extended with airport transfer. This will take place on fixed times on February 28 from Bergen Airport and on March 5 leaving Gulen Dive Resort. Please check with Gulen Dive Resort for exact times and make sure you blease book your flights accordingly.

The Nudibranch Safari 2017 experts

The Nudibranch Safari will be hosted by a unique line-up of top experts who will be on site to share their knowledge with the participants:

 Bernard Picton 

Curator at the Museum of Natural History, Belfast, Northern Ireland

Nudibranch expert Bernard Picton, author of "A Field Guide to the Nudibranchs of the British Isles" works as curator of marine invertebrates at the department of natural sciences at the National Museums in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He has described several species and publishged numerous papers on nudibranchs and other marine animals, and with over 40 years experience he is recognized as one of the leading nudibranch experts in the world.

 Alexander Martynov 

Scientist of the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University, Russia

Alexander Martynov is author of more than 80 scientific publications (including monographs) and together with his wife Dr. Tatiana Korshunova he is co-author of the colour guide “Opisthobranch molluscs of the Seas of Russia”. Since 1992 he has described 30 new nudibranch species, 9 new genera and 1 new family. The Russian couple's vast experience from several parts of the world is a great addition to the Nudibranch Safari.

 Klas Malmberg 

Marine Biologist, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Klas Malmberg is a marine biologist, a freelance journalist, a professional diver and an underwater photographer based in Göteborg in Sweden. He has a Master's degree in Systematic Zoology and he is also an educated teacher. As an underwater photographer Klas is a Swedish Champion, Nordic Champion and has participated in the world championships several times. He is also co-author of the recently published book called "Svenska Nackensnäckor".

 Torkild Bakken 

Head of Department, University in Trondheim, Norway

Current position is Head of Department, which also allows time for research and teaching. Main research fields are biosystematics and biogeography, particularly of polychaete worms (Polychaeta). He also has a great interest in nudibranch molluscs (Nudibranchia), and his research is focused on phylogeny, taxonomy and biogeography in these groups, as well as faunistics and biodiversity of marine invertebrates along the Norwegian coast.

Nudibranch diving

The dives on the Nudibranch Safari will be made on the house reef of Gulen Dive Resort, where a staggering 76 species of nudibranchs have been found so far. The nudibranch experts will be at hand to assist in identifying what we find and update the species list.

Nudibranch litterature, stereo magnifiers, magnifying glasses for diving and other equipment for collection, closer study and identification will be available.

Not only will you learn a lot about nudibranchs at the Nudibranch Safari - it also offers some unique photo opportunities!

Citizen science

At the Nudibranch Safari, the participants help in the ongoing work to find and identify new species. So far we have found several species new to Norway, and four species new to science. These are currently being described by the scientists.

By taking part you will not only learn a great deal about nudibranchs and their behavior, but you will also make a contribution to science. Perhaps YOU will be the one who finds a new species next year? You never know - but we find something new and exciting every year.

Stereo magnifiers, litterature and other tools for closer study of nudibranchs will be at hand at the Nudibranch Safari.
