Today, I have added 40 new images from the island of Myken, just above the arctic circle on the northern coast of Norway. The area surrounding the islands is a pristine playground for divers. Posted on Dec 18, 2008 Myken is a small island off the coast of northern Norway, just above the arctic circle at 68° north. This small community 34 kilometers off the mainland is home to just 14 people, several of whom have emigrated from Iceland. The area is virtually untouched under water, and very few people have had the pleasure of diving the pristine waters found here. With no dive shop or resort on the island, visiting divers have to bring everything themselves - including a compressor, tanks and weights. Rich marine life The sprawling kelp forest shows an unusually rich and abundant marine life. There seemed to be creatures living everywhere, and the cliché "diving in an aquarium" actually came to mind several times. The area surrounding the islands offer many great divespots, and the remoteness from the mainland means there is no pollution or waste of any kind. An article from the trip was on print in Norwegian dive magazine Dykking in December 2007. If you're interested in this story, please get in touch. » Click here to browse images from Myken |
