Reptiles on Scubapixel

When you think about marine life, reptiles probably aren't the first thing that comes to mind. But turtles, crocodiles, snakes and lizards all take to the sea - and images of some of them can be found here.

I wish I could say that the oceans are full of marine reptiles, but the sad truth is that many of them are endangered - or naturally rare.

Divers still encounter reptiles on a regular basis, and the ScubaPixel database contains images of several species photographed in different corners of the world.

Sea turtles are among the most well-known and beloved marine reptiles, and seeing them always brings out a smile. They are gentle and shy, but sometimes curious too.

Unlinke their cousins at the Galapagos islands, the iguanas found on Bonaire in the Caribbean are not counted as a marine species - but they may be encountered swimming in shallow waters.

The green iguana is a good swimmer, and is very often found near water.

Reptiles are not true marine creatures. They have to surface to breath air just like we do, and need to find dry land to be able to reproduce.

If you want to know more about marine reptiles, Wikipedia has a list of the species that have made the oceans their home.
