800 year old log boat

In 2009 I got the unique opportunity to dive on the wreck of an over 800 year old log boat, days before it was salvaged for conservation. Check out the images in the ScubaPixel database.

Posted on Aug 5, 2009

The boat, which has been carbon dated to between 1160-1290 (and certainly is the oldest wreck I have ever dived!) was 4,5 meters long and 0,46 meters wide and covered in mud.

Conditions were pretty lousy, but I still managed to bag a few shots of this medieval relic.

About a week later I went back to witness the log boat being salvaged by divers and people from the Norwegian Maritime Museum:

The log boat will now reside in a water tank as part of the restoration process undertaken by the local historical society, and the plan is to unveil it for an exhibition at a municipal anniversary in 2015.

I also wrote a two-page story about the salvage for Dykking, the Norwegian dive magazine:

Please get in touch if you're interested in running this story in your magazine!

The database contains a few precious images of this unique wreck, both under water and from when it was salvaged.
