Having one of your images on the cover of a magazine is something that doesn't happen too often, and it always a treat. But what does it really take to shoot a magazine cover?

There are many things to keep in mind! Cover shots are often quite different from standard, well-composed images - and if you don't know what you need to think about you can shoot for ever without getting there.

Colorful, monochrome and with eye contact (where appliccable) - those are things to have in mind when shooting macro with the intent of making it to the cover page. Remember that there always has to be plenty of space for text!

Portrait, negative space, eye contact...

...space for logo type and texts, should there be divers or not - and not to mention superb technical quality and outstanding subject matter. Where to begin?

Share this informative, useful story with your readers and help them better grasp what it takes to shoot one of the most difficult types of underwater images there is.

I have been lucky enough to have many images on the cover of dive magazines around the world, and in this story I offer tips and advice and share some of the secrets behind getting on the cover.

Divers are also a very popular cover theme - in fact, some magazines insist on it on the grounds that potential buyers/readers more easily can identify with the contents.

This 1.250 word story comes complete with a selection of cover shots, both actual covers and the "behind the scenes" images.

The story runs very nicely on a 5-page spread, but can be adapted in either direction for a shorter "photo tip" style story, or a bigger feature with more info about the images.

Not only will you readers appreciate the hands-on approach and valuable advice - who knows, maybe you'll soon have a better selection of cover canditates to choose from?
