20 pages about nudibranchs!

Russian dive magazine Ultimate Depth know no limits when it comes to their love for nudibranchs: They presented my story about the Nudibranch Safari on a 20-page spread in their December 2013 issue!

Nudibranchs offer a wide variety of colorful and interesting photo subjects, even in temperate and cold water. They display the same mesmerizing beauty no matter where you find them!

This is not lost on Russian dive magazine Ultimate Depth, who published my relatively short story about nudibranchs and the Nudibranch Safari in their December 2013 issue - on a 20-page spread.

Adalaria proxima is one of the most commun nudibranchs in Norwegian waters. Although relatively inconspicuous, it displays some very interesting details when seen close up.

A strange microcosmos

The universe of the nudibranchs is a strange microcosmos - and if you get hooked, you'll soon find yourself addicted to looking for new and ever stranger species.

The story gives an introduction to what nudibranchs are - how they reproduce, how and where to find them, what they eat and so on.

Did you for instance know that many nudibranchs which feed on hydroids are able to steal the stinging cells of their prey and use it for their own protection?

The colorful Flabellina nobilis is one of the species able to steal stinging cells from hydroids and use it for its own protection - a process called kleptocnidae.

Nudibranch Safari

The story also covers the Nudibranch Safari which is held annually in March at Gulen Dive Resort on the Norwegian west coast.

So far, 63 different species have been identified here, on the house reef alone! Every year, nudibranch experts, underwater photographers and enthusiasts gather here for a unique workshop where they learn a lot about nudibranchs - biology, reproduction, identification and photography.

Shooting nudibranchs seems to be every underwater photographer's favorite pastime - and the rewards are great. These colourful creatures make great subjects, but they can be trickier to shoot than you'd...
